My eight-year-old daughter stayed at the airport while the rest of the family boarded the plane to Disneyland. I was at work when the family chat filled up with vacation photos – and that’s when I saw a message that gave me chills:
“Come get her. We're getting in.'
Mom added coldly: "Don't hurt us. She has to learn something.”
I didn't answer. I immediately left work and ran to the airport, imagining all possible dangers. When I found her, she would sit on the floor at the gate, hugging her pink backpack tightly, with her eyes swollen from crying. She looked at me and quietly asked, “Mom... was I rude?”
That question broke me.
I embraced her tightly and assured her that she had done nothing wrong.
Instead of arguing in a chat or screaming, I calmly took action. I asked airport security to document the incident and contacted the police to draw up an official report. I contacted the airline to report that the minor had been left unattended, I challenged the common travel costs with my bank and hired a family lawyer to initiate formal protective measures. I made sure that everything was documented - legally, calmly and permanently.
